Sólheimajökull, The longest glacier to descend from the Mýrdalsjökull icecap, lies just off the main road and only 21km from the hotel. It is readily accessible by small cars crossing the rugged outwash valley floor. The glacier is retreating fast and the pro-glacial area is for ever changing but it is usually very easy to walk from the parking area to the glacier. Centuries of volcanic activity have plastered the glacier in ash on many occasions and these tephra layers appear at the steep margin in the form of dirt cones. Guides are available to take you onto the glacier. Only a few kilometres from here you can ascend the icecap on snowmobile or in a trailer towed by a snow groomer. We can book this for you.
